Why Learn to Skate (LTS)?

Joining our Learn to Skate program is an excellent way for skaters to develop their skills, make new friends, and have fun on the ice! Our Learn to Skate program follows the curriculum and guidelines set forth by Learn to Skate USA including having certified instructors & volunteers and a structured group lesson based on the skater’s skill level in a FUN and SAFE environment. This program is designed so that skaters are building upon the skills learned in the previous level while progressing at their own rate. This progressive learning approach helps keep skaters engaged and motivated to continue skating as they work towards achieving new goals and mastering new techniques. In the group setting, skaters can learn from each other and be motivated by their peers. When skaters see their classmates progressing and achieving new skills, it can inspire them to work harder and push themselves further. Skaters get to meet new friends and develop relationships while fostering a sense of community.  Our Learn to Skate program is the most cost-effective way for skaters to Learn to Skate. Skaters who are new to ice skating are recommended to join our LTS program before becoming a club member, although this is not a requirement. All Learn to Skate participants will have an opportunity to participate in our Winter & Spring Shows in a group setting.

Why Become a Club Member?

The NIFSC Membership is aimed to enhance the Learn to Skate experience, not take its place. Becoming a member of NIFSC enables a skater to participate in the U.S. Figure Skating events, including competitions and testing. Club Member skaters can choose to participate in all NIFSC-sponsored events such as the Winter Show, Competitors Showcase, the annual Spring Show, and much MORE! As a member of NIFSC, you gain access to open club ice, the opportunity to schedule private lessons with one of our club coaches, and access to special club only classes such as Performance Team, Power & Edge, Moves in the Field, and Off-Ice classes. You also gain access to our club member only locker room, vote at our annual meeting, and become eligible for club member-only annual awards. Our club members also receive FREE or discounted admission to our club sponsored public events & special clinics. Lastly, you have the opportunity to share your love of figure skating with others and form lifelong friendships.

Can my skater be a part of both programs?

Absolutely! We recommend that all skaters of all abilities continue to take group lessons through our Learn to Skate program until they pass their highest level available (FreeSkate 6 for youth, Adult 6 for adults). Our LTS program is flexible enough that skaters can choose to participate in one session, take a break, and come back as their schedule allows. An LTS skater who wishes to enhance their figure skating through additional practice ice time, competition, or preparing for the USFS test track will benefit from club membership in addition to their group lessons through LTS. Once you choose to join NIFSC as a club member you will more than likely hire a coach for private or semi-private lessons. During these lessons you may be working on more individualized goals such as one of the USFS test track levels or competition programs, leaving little time to learn new skills without scheduling multiple private lessons. Often skaters who continue with the group lesson through LTS develop and master their skills more efficiently.
